In our modern society, is not strange to see that certain specific days count with a special value in some cultures, for example, we have Thanksgiving in the US which is fairly recognized across the world for being a unique day filled with celebrations, however, you could end up surprised after you decide to read more about other countries’ special days and celebrations.
A great example of a date that carries a special symbolism towards one or two cultures is Cinco de Mayo for both Mexicans and Americans (that sometimes decide to celebrate it with their Mexican partners or friends)
What is Cinco de Mayo?
In simple words, Cinco de Mayo is an annual celebration that is hosted in Mexico and in certain states of the US (especially in those where Mexican culture and civilization counts with more presence, for example in California) that commemorates the anniversary of one of Mexico’s most important victory over the French Empire in 1862, which at that time, managed to boost Mexico’s morale and desire to fight against a more mighty and better-prepared enemy. Believe it or not, in the last few years, Cinco de Mayo has been more celebrated in the US than in Mexico cities.
The History of Cinco de Mayo
The Battle of Puebla in 1862 was led by General Ignacio Zaragoza and it was the first time where Mexico managed to beat the French Empire, and considering that the latter was stronger in terms of weapons, army, and even training methods and war strategies, this was an accomplishment of great magnitude to the point that it was marked as ‘El Dia de la Batalla de Puebla’ or The Day of The Battle of Puebla.
When is Cinco de Mayo?
Like its name in Spanish suggest, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated yearly every fifth of May, and believe it or not, this event is so popular that it even gets mistaken for other important days: Mexico’s Independence Day, but this other holiday is celebrated on September 16, and it’s a whole different celebration, so make sure that you never confuse both of them.
Cinco de Mayo Dates
This year Cinco de Mayo is celebrated on Friday, May 05, 2023
How is Cinco de Mayo Celebrated?
Cinco de Mayo is celebrated as if it was a great scale party, in the city of Puebla you will see tons of Parades arranged by cultural groups, and also, you can see tons of food, music, dances, and historical records and storytellers about the importance of such holiday. Just to give you an idea of the magnitude, it’s said that Cinco de Mayo generates beer sales on par with the Superbowl, and this is because since in the 80s, beer and tequila companies combined this holiday with advertising campaigns of their products consisting in sales and bundles in stores.
Why we Love Cinco de Mayo?
Cinco de Mayo is loved because of all of the big sales of beer and tequila that take place in some states of the US, and also because in Mexico you can see beautiful dances and parades that will definitely leave you surprised due to the scale of the celebrations and for how even Americans take place in a holiday that was originated in another country, but thanks to the Mexican population in the US, is a beautiful event that can be celebrated among other culture without any problem.
It’s surprising how many holidays can be missed because we don’t know the context of the celebration and why it remains a special day for a certain culture, however, Cinco de Mayo is definitely one of those holidays that you can’t just ignore, try to be prepared for this year’s celebration, as you can see some magnificent music, dances, and magnificent dishes with their unique drinks.
