What is Labor Day?
A public holiday set aside for the people who do the work. Offices, schools and banks close, and the day is generally spent away from the job — which is the point, given that the movement it commemorates spent decades arguing that rest is not a privilege.
Why Labor Day matters
Because the things it marks were fought for rather than granted: limits on the working day, a weekend, minimum standards for pay and safety, and the right to organise at all. The holiday is a standing reminder that those arrangements were built by people, and can be maintained or eroded by people.
The history of Labor Day
The first observance was a parade in New York City on 5 September 1882, organised by the Central Labor Union. It was not a holiday then — the marchers gave up a day’s pay to take part. Individual states began recognising the date through the 1880s and 1890s, and Congress made it a federal holiday in 1894.

Always the first Monday of September, so the date moves each year: 7 September in 2026, 6 September in 2027. Only the weekday is fixed, which is what gives the holiday its long weekend.

There is no single correct way, and none of these require spending anything.
Go to the parade
The parade is the original form of the day — the 1882 observance was a march. Most cities of any size still hold one.
Back the cause
Give time or money to something working on wages, conditions or workplace safety. The day exists because people organised for those things.
Say it to someone working
Plenty of people are on shift on Labor Day — retail, hospitality, transport, care. A word to them costs nothing and lands better than a post.
Take the day off properly
A long weekend with people you like is not a lesser way to mark it. Rest was the point of the eight-hour-day campaign.
Why the day endures
Partly habit and partly the calendar — it closes the summer and opens the school year. But it also survives because the argument it came from has not finished: what a fair day’s work is worth, and who decides, are still live questions. That keeps a 19th-century parade relevant in a way most invented holidays never manage.

The September date came first in the United States: the Central Labor Union held its parade on 5 September 1882, before 1 May became the international date. When the holiday was made federal in 1894 the September date was kept, which is why the US observance sits apart from International Workers’ Day.
Is Labor Day a paid day off?
For federal employees, yes. For everyone else it depends on the employer — there is no general legal requirement for private-sector paid holidays in the United States, which is part of why the day still has something to say.
Why is it called the unofficial end of summer?
Because of where it falls rather than anything in the holiday itself: the first Monday of September lines up with the end of the school break and the last long weekend of warm weather in much of the country.
