What is National Pet Day?
April 11 is National Pet Day, a day to celebrate the bond between humans and pets.
For many of us, pets are more than just animals-they’re members of the family. It’s common for people to feel depressed or lonely when they don’t have a pet in their life. Pets provide us with unconditional love, protection from loneliness and depression, and entertainment. In return for all they give us, we provide them with food, shelter, and our time and affection.
If you’ve been considering adopting a pet into your home but haven’t had the chance yet, this is a great opportunity to reflect on what you would miss if you didn’t have a furry friend in your life.
Pets can teach us responsibility by giving us something to care for that doesn’t always rely on us for survival. They help teach children empathy by caring for another living being who can’t speak for themselves. Pets also teach us trust because we have to trust our pets not to judge or harm us when we’re at our most vulnerable moments. And they offer the unconditional love that often far surpasses what humans can offer each other in relationships.

In 1995, the list of aims for National Pet Day was broadened. In addition to promoting pet adoption and animal welfare, the day was also devoted to raising awareness about the need to spay or neuter pets and preventing animal cruelty and abuse.
