The story of the teddy bear began in November 1902. President Theodore Roosevelt joined a bear hunt in Onward, Mississippi, hosted by Governor Andrew H. Longino. When hunting guide Holt Collier tied an exhausted black bear to a tree, Roosevelt refused to shoot it. He said harming a trapped animal was bad sportsmanship.

News of the hunt spread fast. Cartoonist Clifford Berryman drew the scene for The Washington Post on 16 November 1902 under the title ‘Drawing the Line in Mississippi.’ The cartoon showed Roosevelt turning away from a small, cute bear.

In Brooklyn, Russian-Jewish shop owners Morris Michtom and his wife Rose saw the sketch. They made a velvet bear and placed it in their candy shop window labelled ‘Teddy’s Bear.’ With written approval from President Roosevelt, the Michtoms produced the toy in large numbers and formed the Ideal Novelty and Toy Company.

The origins of the 9 September calendar date remain informal. Old claims that the day started in 1986 confuse 9 September with Good Bear Day. That event takes place on 27 October, which is Roosevelt’s birthday. Greeting card makers and toy fans adopted 9 September as a separate fun calendar date.

The Steiff 1903 Leipzig Fair debut and Good Bear Day

At the same time in Giengen, Germany, toy designer Richard Steiff built a jointed plush bear called the 55 PB. Steiff showed his soft bear at the Leipzig Toy Fair in March 1903. American buyer Hermann Berg saw the toy and placed a large order of 3,000 bears, launching a global toy trend.
