Dungeon Games
Dungeon games are a type of role-playing video game characterized by a dungeon setting, either an underground area or a series of rooms and corridors. These games usually involve navigating the dungeon, battling monsters, and looting treasure. The first dungeon game was 1981’s Dandy, which is considered to be a forerunner to the popular Legend of Zelda series. Two other influential dungeon-crawler games were Dungeon Master (1987) and Eye of the Beholder (1991).
Since then, dungeon games have become a staple in the video game industry. In recent years, there has been a resurgence in interest for this genre with titles such as Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, Icewind Dale, Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadows of Amn, Fallout 3, Torchlight, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Shadowrun Returns, Dungeons & Dragons Online, Neverwinter Nights 2, Dragon Age Origins, Kingdom Come Deliverance, Divinity Original Sin, Darkest Dungeon, Pillars of Eternity, Mount&Blade, Wasteland 2, Torment: Tides of Numenera, Pathologic, Crypt Of The Necrodancer, Bloodborne. The list can go on forever..
